Basic Mihi

Kia ora. In Te Ngahere we have been learning our pepeha and a basic mihi. In our pepha we had to make sure we had our Maunga, Awa, Waka, Iwi, Hapu, Marae, Surname, School, Your family and where your from and you. We were learning our pepeha and basic mihi to comfort and welcome new students to our school. We are learning for when we go to a marae and have to say a mihi and our/or pepeha. I enjoyed this because I got to know others and where their from. What I found hard was pronouncing the maori kopu. Have you learnt your pepeha? I hope you enjoyed.

Ngahere Bush Walk

Kia ora. On Thursday in Te Ngahere we went for a bush walk down in the Ngahere. We walked down the Paihia School track. Before we went we had to research about the Ngahere, about what we could or would possible see.

When we went on our walk the first tree we saw was a Totara tree, I see them often but never knew the name of them. As we actually walked on the track we tended to find heaps of ferns and they were beautiful. I learnt different names of ferns such as the king fern which has huge leaves and also the silver fern. I also learnt about Kowhai Trees. I learnt that Kowhai flowers blossom in spring and can grow up to 25m high. 

I saw a koru curled up inside a tree. I was so amazed. I had a great time and we took heaps of pictures.

Confusing Food Web # 2

Kia ora. We are explaining the differences between our food webs and the teachers food web. The teachers food web was not as confusing as mine. A food web displays energy flow from producers to consumers.

Their food web is different because they coloured their arrows and we have black arrows which is making ours difficult to understand. They have colored arrows so they know what eats what. For example:They had green arrows. The arrows started at the food source and ended at what ate it in other words this is called energy transfer. The back of the arrow goes from the kereru and the arrow points at the possum to show that the possum eats the kereru not the opposite way around.

Something I could do better is to think differently and have an open mind because my food web was a lot more confusing then it would have been if I would have coloured the arrows.

Confusing Food Web

Hello. In Te Ngahere we have been doing learning around food chains. Food chains is when energy is transferred from a living thing to another. In other words a series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.

This was a challenging piece of work as we had to use arrows to point to a source of food which birds and predators eat. We used arrows as it showed what eats what. I learnt that Tui eats Kowhai tree berries. I also learnt that rats eat kereru and it sounds hard to believe.

Something I could do better next time is to listen carefully because the arrows were pointing in the wrong direction and it took time to understand where the arrows are pointing. I liked how confusing the end result came about. I have made a D.L.O to show what I mean. I hope you enjoyed.

Frightening Tsunami

Last Friday we had to evacuate to high grounds. We heard a siren go and as scary as it was we had to stay strong. We were told there was going to be a tsunami at around 8.55am in the morning. We were all panicking and worrying as we evacuated our classrooms.

FIrst thing in the morning we were told to evacuate our classrooms, we couldn’t mark the roll, we couldn’t take bags or even shoes. We had to walk or run up a huge hill that was very tiring. I was so nervous and anxious to find out what would happen next. Jade and I were looking at the water to see if it was any different or if it had changed, but then I got picked up by my uncle and we went to Oromahoe. I was told the kids still up the hill ate at around 12.00pm because people were kind enough to give them food and risk their lives.

Something to remember next time is to stay calm around others to also help them stay calm. I had a scary experience on Friday especially to see students crying because they were worried about their families. Were you safe where you were? Ka Kite!

Sharing my Knowledge about Ecosystem

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about ecosystems. We were learning to make connections between different things we read or view to create new learning. Our purpose is to connect information we already know with new information to understand what we read.

I learnt that ecosystems need a producer, consumer, and decomposer to keep an ecosystem running. I learnt that energy flows through an ecosystem through something called photosynthesis which is the energy from the sunlight that allows plant matter to grow, every ecosystem needs the sun to produce the plants and trees which then helps the consumers. I also learnt that birds and trees have a mutual relationship, they benefit each other, the trees benefit the birds by giving them food (berries) and the birds helping trees reproduce from eating the berries so they don’t grow so close to other trees so they benefit each other.

Something I could do better next time is to re-read the text to find all the key information. Have you learnt about ecosystems? I hope you enjoyed.

Caring For The Kawa Of Care

In Te Ngahere we have been focusing on the kawa of care. Kawa of care is about keeping your chromebook safe. It is important to always follow the kawa of care. The Kawa of Care is an agreement between children, parents and schools to ensure the best care and responsibility of the device is exercised during each child’s time in a 1:1 learning environment. In our classroom we are really committed to the kawa of care, for example I know two students who got there chromebook taken off them because they were walking with their lids open. This is really bad because it might fall and break. After we re-learnt about the kawa of care we then had to create something to show what not to do with your chromebook. We made a video and it looked pretty realistic to us and it will be down below if you want to see it. Don’t break the kawa of care. I hope you liked this blogpost. Do you follow the kawa if care?
